Rammellzee

Sad news this week on the passing of old schooler Rammellzee. His Beat Bop track (featured below) blew me away in the mid eighties and became one of those tracks which mesmerised me as part of the Style Wars soundtrack. The 12" will cost you a pretty penny or two, due to the Basquait cover and limited press. I saw this on a list from Mr Bongo in the mid 90's for 150 quid. Luckily it has been repressed in recent years and was also featured on Electro 2.

SUndays @ Casablabla

Myself and Madcap have just started a residency @ Casablabla on Sunday nights, from 730 to 1230 each week. Spinning Jazz, Soul, Funk and groovy shit. Come on down and say hi if you're about. A great new venue, unlike any other bars or clubs out there, which is a good thing.

Ransom

Ransom. Old school graffiti writer, DJ and producer extraordinaire. Ransom is one of the reasons that Australian music is so strong these days. Bringing out his old crew AKA Brothers on their own Straitup label, he has produced great tracks for the better part of the last 25 years. His ear for great music never disappoints, and his style crossed genres years before people even thought about it. ALways going quietly about his business, he lets the turntables do the talking.

A great track below.

Check out his My Space.

A Tribe Called Quest

Big news for Down Under, A Tribe Called Quest have announced not only hill they get together for this, but they will play in Australia. Only time will tell whether it's 15 years too late. I hope not. I've seen too many acts that I wanted to see in their prime who have only disappointed me when I actually did get to see them. Please Tip, Ali, Phife and Jerobi, play the resurrector, and give the dead some life.

Troubleneck Borthers

You just can't go past this track. It still eludes me on vinyl.

Tony D

. Found this baby on You Tube, I had forgotten about it. Loved this track when it came out, my mate Rank had bought the LP. So much dope stuff around this time, but Tony D's production was dope. Dope track from a Hot Chocolate sample. Sad that he passed last year, I had seen him selling mad vinyl on ebay for the last few. Check his Droppin' Funky Verses LP. I also believe he was the guy was put together Naughty's OPP beat, before Naughty ripped itn He's also responsible for PRT's 'Rock Dis Funky Joint' .

Hightower

I got this track back in the early 2000's on a compilation titled, "Beyond The Valley Of The Beats" (below). The track is called Rocking Chair and is apparently performed by Rosetta Hightower. I knew nothing of this but my man Delta dug up another version on a Labi Siffre LP (Maybe the og?) Shit is banging. The full LP has been re-issued funnily enough by Cherry Red. Who released a lot of punk I was into back in the day.

Diggin For A Living

You gotta check out this mix and blog from Delta - The Lostralian. Undoubtably Australias finest MC export to the world. If you've been living under a rock, he's been travelling the globe, digging and making beats with some of the finest in the world, including Mark B, Psycho Les etc etc. My boy has mad, mad deep crates, an encyclopedic knowledge of everything, makes ill beats and spits rhymes which are on another level, "most comprehended by the tenth listen".

Take Off

The last pots made me think of this track, which is always in my record bag when I leave the house. I only copped the clip once on telly, but as always You Tube comes through with the goods. A dope, one take clip. If ya know the sample, let me know :)

Take Off - Resin Dogs ft Good Buddah

Oz mix

Although I started out with a short mix of Australian gear. You need to check the below mix, "Oz Lessons" pieced together by Jigzaw Jeff aka Blunted Stylus. One time core member of the Resin Dogs, this guys has been making dope beats since the late eighties. He put me onto some mad funk over the years, and boy knows his shit. You also need to check his Trains Of Thought track on the old Four Element Effect release of the late 90's. I believe this track was put together to be released as a bonus to the 15 OZ compilation released on Crookneck, but alas, this didn't happen. Very unfortunate. I think of Jigzaw as Australia's Steinski. He is now currently working under the moniker BBGun and has released some damn nice 7's so far.

Welcome

Alright. This blog has been sitting here blank for about a year and a 1/2. I had always intended on getting it together and sharing some great music, finds and the like. So after actually stopping and recording some mixes, it's time to start posting, sharing and with any luck exploring what anyone else can impart my way. I hope to add the odd mix when I do them and go through some of my vinyl collection and talk about other music I've discovered or uncovered. Enjoy.
